Montpellier, home to a small but growing selection of rooftop bars, with some surprisingly affordable prices for 2026. I was loving €4 for a rosé and €5 for sparkling wine! Perfect if you are passing through this French city as I was or staying for the weekend, there’s one to suit most tastes.
It’s also a city of some pretty impressive firsts: home to one of the world’s oldest medical schools, France’s smallest opera house, and where Nostradamus studied medicine. Wonder if he would have predicted these rooftop bars would be so popular!

L’Arbre Rooftop

Rooftop review roundup: L’Arbre rooftop was my personal favourite rooftop in Montpellier. It ticked all the rooftop boxes for me – height, views, food, drinks, tunes and plenty of space, with some areas in the shade and some not. It was one of those rooftop bars where you can feel your body relax and soak in the city from a new perspective. So much so that I spent way longer than planned and nearly missed my flight!
L’Arbre was my last rooftop stop of my trip, as it was close to the airport. But as I had been busy ordering extra rounds of rose and the best chips ever (and I don’t even like chips that much) and in my panic of losing track of time, I didn’t order an uber. I asked the concierge to call me a taxi which cost far more that I expected. Niavely I wasn’t aware just how much more it would be. So learn from me before you get too relaxed on the rooftop!
Also, in case you get confused, as I did prior to going, there is a restaurant called ‘Restaurant l’Arbre et Bar en Haut’ on google maps. This is not the rooftop but a resturant on the ground floor of this famed ‘White Building’. With different opening times to the resturant. I went in July and called ahead as I could only visit in the afternoon and was so pleased I did! The rooftop was actually open from lunchtime with small plates available. Opening times can change so do check thought they have now updated their site so you should be safe! As you wouldn’t want to miss this rooftop. If you only get to visit on in Montpellier, make it L’Arbe.

Rooftop review roundup: I was the most excited to visit the rooftop at Miranove Hotel out of all of the rooftops in Montpellier, but I was a little disappointed. From the marketing pictures, it looked aesthetically pleasing with its white meringue shaped umbrellas. 5 star worthy. In reality it was a little more 3.5 stars. And this is why I will always will use my own photos for reviews. (Y I think in part, it just wasn’t set up well and the pool slightly cheapened the look too. I knew, by law, pools in France have to gated, but this area just wasn’t giving 5 star rooftop vibes. If the pretty parasol umbrellas had all been up and it was just a bar then it would definitely be worth of 4 stars – especially with the super lovely staff. And €4 for a rosé and €5 for sparkling wine is the kind of rooftop prices we like.
The rooftop bar is on the 6th floor with the their panoramic rooftop restaurant, one floor up. However it isn’t open until the evenings and is largely indoors but there is a decent outdoor area. That alone would be magical for dinner in the summer and a reason I would definitely would go back.
For chilled afternoon vibes I would recommend, just don’t feel you need to dress up, as I thought you might.

Nonna Gioia Rooftop at Jost Hotel

Rooftop review roundup: Nonna Gioia might be one of the best rooftops I have found on a hostel. As whilst called the Jost Hotel, it is actually an upmarket hostel. With so much character and charm that I would consider staying here next visit, especially as it has a rooftop pool.
The pool isn’t fenced off but you have to walk up a few steps to enter and it is only for guests of the hostel. The rest of the rooftop is open to all, which I did feel a bit like I was intruding, rocking up for a drink in quite a small area while people were lounging in wet swimmers. There is another space away from the bar area, but the DJ based by the pool. A rooftop ideal for anyone wanting to be based in the new area being developed close to Montpellier’s main station, Gare Saint-Roch.

Rooftop review roundup: Only a floor up, so it’s scraping in as rooftop terrace, but as you can perch watching the colourful trams roll past, I am totally counting it. As, it turned out the trams are pretty picturesk and became a fun game to guess which was next.
Very relaxed with the bar itself just inside. Come for the cocktails, as the name suggests or their mixology classes or just to wait in calm with a glass of something before taking the train – makes for a great meeting spot.

Rooftop review roundup: A family friendly restaurant with a rooftop pool taking center stage. I visited in the height of a heatwave and the pool was uncomfortably and understandably busy. But as it features so prominently, I felt a bit overwhelmed. It was a lot more enclosed that I was expecting, which added to that feeling. I would go back but for dinner (or in off season) when the pool is empty as they win massive points for their gluten free menu, I wish I had felt comforable staying to try.

Bonus: La Terrasse at Montpellier Airport
So this terrace gets an honourable mention in my Montpellier rooftop roundup for smokers and those looking for some outdoor space at the airport.
It’s free to use and located on Level 1 of the departures area, near passport control and Gates 16 and 17. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered it. BUT then I knew why – it isn’t a bar or restaurant like some airport rooftops; it’s simply an open-air space. However the VIP lounge is next door, and if you have access, you can take your drink or snack outside onto the terrace. Or just take your own out.
So your rooftop adventures in Montpellier don’t end when you leave for the airport – they end when you board your flight!
