One of the most common questions I’m asked is what to expect from a rooftop bar. From what to wear and when to go, to whether you need to book and which rooftops are really worth it. Having visited over 700 rooftop bars worldwide, I’ve pulled together these rooftop bar FAQs to answer the questions I’m asked most before heading up high, so you know what to expect and can choose the right rooftop for you. Cheers!

Everything you need to know before visiting a Rooftop Bar
What should I wear to a rooftop bar?
Some rooftop bars are definitely fancier and can feel a bit intimidating at first. Cities vary too, for example Melbourne tends to be more relaxed, while Manchester likes to dress up. I’ve shown up in everything from a work suit to summer dresses, jeans and trainers, and even swimmers (not in London!). I can’t wear heels (too clumsy), so I’m usually in trainers or sandals. I’ve been overdressed, underdressed and everything in between but it rarely matters once you have a drink in hand taking in the view. The best advice I can give? Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident that you would wear to a regular bar! Still need help then my top tips would be:
1. Check the venue’s website for any dress code It’s not as common these days, but some (especially the fancier ones) don’t allow caps, tracksuits, sports logos, or sporty trainers (fashion trainers are usually fine).
2. Stalk their socials to get a sense of the vibe and visitors. Remember though like people they usually only post their best nights.
3. DM or email the venue, or message me if you’re stuck.
Are Rooftop Bars open all day?
No, most rooftop bars are not open all day. I’ve found that opening times constantly change due to weather, season, and private bookings. This is why I don’t list opening times on this site. Here’s my top tips for getting the most accurate information:
1. Check their website for opening times (amazing how many don’t list them), and even if they do it doesn’t mean it’s accurate! Top tip: if they have a booking system, click through as if to book – usually you can find the times this way.
2. If you can book, then do. That way they will have to inform you if anything changes.
3. Cross reference with the rooftops social media. Some will post when they have to close to due to weather or have a private event booked – though often only on the day!
Do I need to book a Rooftop bar in advance?
It depends. Saturday night in July in London? Yes. Tuesday in February in Athens? Probably not. I usually recommend booking when possible. Rooftops are popular for private hire and closures happen more than you’d expect. Booking means you’ll be informed if plans change. Not so fun fact, I once stayed at a hotel for the rooftop pool, only to find it closed for a private event. It was in the small print, but still gutting. Don’t be me, check.
Do Rooftop Bars allow walk ins?
Yes, many do. Some venues only operate this way. But check the policy. Top tip: get there early to nab a good spot (or send one of the early birds in your group!). Top tip for NYC Rooftop bars: Unlike anywhere else I have been, some rooftop bars in NYC won’t seat you until your whole party has arrived.
What should I take to a Rooftop bar?
Here’s what I always take:
1. Sunblock, even on cloudy days (yes, even London).
2. Sunglasses, for the sun and the selfies.
3. A light jacket, temperatures drop fast when the sun goes down.
4. A spare phone battery – you will take more photos than you expect.
5. A phone lanyard in some cities (certainly London and Barcelona), phone snatching has become extreme.
Timing, atmosphere and weather
What is the best time of day to visit a Rooftop Bar?
Sunset, sunset, sunset! The lighting is magical, the vibes peak, and golden hour selfies are undefeated. That said, it’s also the busiest time. So book!
I also love to go when a rooftop bar opens for the day or night. First there means you can take all the selfies without feeling self-conscious and have the pick of the seating if it’s not reserved.
When are Rooftop Bars busiest?
Early evenings on Thursdays to Saturdays are peak times, especially when the weather’s good. If you want quieter vibes, go earlier or mid-week.
Do Rooftop Bars close in bad weather?
Some do, yes. Some have indoor areas, retractable roofs and even umbrellas! I have included this in my reviews but my advise on the day would be to call and check.
Are Rooftop Bars open in Winter?
Many are. Some transform into winter rooftops with heaters, blankets, igloos or covered sections. With winter warming cocktailing like mulled wine to keep you toasty! Don’t assume rooftops are summer-only.
Rules, Access & Practicalities of Rooftop Bars
Do rooftop bars have age restrictions or need ID?
Yes, most rooftop bars check for ID, usually operating a “look under 25” policy. Some have a blanket rule to do this for everyone – I’ve only found this in New York and Sydney. And of course, cities like New York and Dubai have a drinking age of 21+. If abroad, check whether venues accept ID other than a passport.
Can you visit a hotel rooftop bar if you’re not staying there?
Usually yes! The majority of rooftop bars are actually situated on hotels and yes, you can! This surprises a lot of people. Rooftop pools are usually just for guests, but the bars are typically open to all. You’ll need to check the times they open up to the public as they can be later in the day.
Are Rooftop Bars card or cash only?
Most rooftop bars are card-only now, but this varies by country. In places like Split or Marrakesh, I found some cash-only venues still exist. So I always carry a card and some cash when rooftoping!
Can you smoke at a Rooftop Bar?
Some allow smoking, others don’t. In Europe, you’ll find more smoking-friendly rooftops. In London and New York, rules are stricter and usually a no. When in doubt, ask staff.
Are children allowed at Rooftop Bars?
Sometimes. Some rooftop bars allow children during the day, others are strictly adults-only or over-21. If you’re visiting London, I have a full roundup of kid-friendly rooftops on the site.
Are rooftop bars accessible?
Accessibility varies. Many rooftops have lifts, but some require stairs or have limited access often due to old buildings. If accessibility is cruical for your visit, I recommend contacting the venue directly to confirm lift access and seating options. I have included this in many of my reviews.
Choosing the right Rooftop Bar
I don’t drink – will I still enjoy a Rooftop Bar?
Yes! Especially if you enjoy going to a regular bar then absolutely – more so probably. I have plenty of friends that don’t drink and times I haven’t (yes really!). The dopamine from the views, the vibe and hopefully the warm weather is intoxicating enough sometimes. Plus mocktails have levelled up their game but then again so have the prices. You will also find some rooftop bars have events like rooftop yoga, rooftop cinemas, crazy golf or even ice rinks!
Can you go to a Rooftop Bar alone?
Absolutely. Rooftop bars are great solo spots, especially earlier in the day or at opening time. Grab a seat at the bar, enjoy the view and take your time. It’s one of my favourite ‘hobbies!’.
Are Rooftop Bars worth it?
I think so but I am bias! You are often paying a premium for the view as much as the drink, but the experience, atmosphere and setting can make it completely worth it, if you choose the right rooftop for you – which is where I come in! Ideal for impressing a date, celebrating something special or just needing a new perspective.
What’s the best rooftop bar in London?
This always depends on your vibe, budget, group size and occasion. For a stunning all-rounder with incredible views, Wagtail is hard to beat. I also have a full Best Of section on the site covering everything from best views to kid-friendly rooftops.
What city has the best Rooftop Bars?
So far, New York. It’s the birthplace of the rooftop bar and has something for everyone. That said, Lindos in Rhodes has an entire town of whitewashed rooftop restaurants, Dubai delivers next-level otherworldy rooftops, Barcelona is where I fell in love with rooftops abroad, Lisbon is where this site idea was born, and of course, London as it is home. So it can also be very personal preference!
Why can’t I find some rooftop bars on Instagram?
Some rooftops don’t have their own accounts, especially hotel-based ones. Check the hotel’s page, location tags or highlights. Some still only use Facebook that isn’t that well maintained but don’t let that put you off. And if you’re really stuck, check my site or message me.
Trust & Transparency
Why trust ‘Where’s the Rooftop’ when choosing a rooftop bar?
Because every rooftop on Where’s the Rooftop® is personally visited, photographed and reviewed by me. I don’t use venue images, accept submissions or paid placements, on the website or across social media. Collaborations and PR invitations are rare, carefully considered and fully transparent, and never influence coverage. All content remains editorially independent. My goal is simple, to help you find the rooftop that matches your moment.
What is World Rooftop Day?
World Rooftop Day is an annual celebration on June 26th of rooftop culture, connection and rising above it all.
