Where can you find a tiny touch of France and Denmark in one little English seaside village? That is just 60 minutes from London with all the ocean views? Set in a quaint seaside town, Folkestone is a world away from the city smog of London and makes the perfect day trip – there’s even a little rooftop!

How to get to Folkestone from London?
From most London stations it’s a quick and effortless, direct journey to the coast in about an hour. (Check you book a direct train). It is then a short walk from the station, round the cobbled streets and you are in the centre of Folkestone within minutes. If you are feeling really lazy or have mobility issues you can also jump in a cab which can whisk you in straight down.

Where to have lunch in Folkestone?
Potter round the independent shops and make your way to your lunch venue, Rock Salt. The restaurant is set right on the waters edge and we were met with the same warmth and charm we had encountered in the village. Sadly, it was a little too windy to be sat outside but with floor to ceiling glass doors it was almost like dining alfresco.

Once I had finally settled on a spot (I am that person where I sit makes or breaks a meal.) lunch unfolded like a royal feast, lingering into the afternoon. The cuisine was divine, the wine exquisite, and the service impeccable. (If you go, say hi to Meg – the greatest waitress.)

For those craving that holiday feeling but can’t get away right now then you won’t be disappointed. Sitting staring out into the blues and greens waters ahead was almost as good as being abroad. (Almost!)

What to do in Folkestone?
Visit Sunny Sands beach and the little mermaid. Just a 5 minute walk along from Rock Salt you will find a Little mermaid! I found the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen underwhelming and disappointing but as I wasn’t expecting this, I was impressed! Inspired by the story of the Sea Lady and modelled on a local for a ‘real’ figure, she stands proudly as a symbol of confidence.

Wander round the harbour, posing with the giant seagull statues and head to the very end where you will find the Lighthouse champagne bar. Only 23 miles away from France, the sea views are sensational and the champagne tastes pretty similar than if you were in the South of France. Offering tastings, light lunches or just a glass of bubbles this is a must. Opening times do vary so do check before you go.

After some bubbles by the beach then wander on the sand where you will find beach huts or hangouts developed as part are a creative extension to the harbour and part of a creative project of Folkestone.

Then head back Rock Salt for some rooftop drinks to watch the sunset (depending on the time of year!). Potter back through the village via a few gorgeous gift shops to catch your train back to London.

The perfect end to a miniature mini break at minimum hassle and maximum relaxation. Cheers!
