The Best Rooftop Bars in Melbourne

I’ve been to Australia seven times and I even lived here for a period and Melbourne’s rooftop scene is not just rooftop drinks with a view. Melbourne’s rooftop bars have genuine personality, the kind that feels closer to European bar culture than anything you’d expect from a sunny southern hemisphere city. There’s something almost underground about many of them – creative, characterful, unapologetically individual.

My last visit to Melbourne was in 40 degree heat so I’ve done the legwork on which rooftops are worth your time and which are just capitalising on a great view. This guide covers the 20 best rooftop bars in Melbourne, all personally visited and reviewed, to help you find the ones with the right combination of atmosphere, drinks and that Melbourne magic.

Rooftop review roundup: Loop Roof is one of my all-time favourite rooftop bars in Melbourne, thanks to its warm, welcoming staff, amazing city views and cocktails. It has had a little rooftop refresh since my last visit, with colourful sofas and a new cocktail menu. Sadly, the Parrot’s Beak cocktail is RIP, but they now have the Yellow Bird, which they dedicated to World Rooftop Day, the rooftop celebration I founded, inspired by the philosophy of freedom.

On my last visit, I got lucky with the weather. It was a scorching Saturday afternoon, but thanks to the timing, the bar was in the shade. I was greeted by a friendly bouncer downstairs before climbing a few flights of stairs and entering an unpretentious garden oasis. This was Level 3! The original rooftop space, built back in 2013, is weatherproof and usable all year round, but I was headed to the top. Level 4!

When reserving a table, do specify if you have a preference for either level. They’ll always try to accommodate you, but you could be seated on either one. Equally, if you have particular seating or neurodiversity-related needs, such as wanting to be tucked away or seated in a high-backed chair, there is a variety of options. These include high and low chairs, benches, sofas and even a booth, so do mention your preferences when booking. Naturally, I requested a table closest to the view. Thanks to the heatwave, it wasn’t as busy as I’d expected so it was happily accommodated!

Service was attentive, the cocktails were tasty and fun, and I even inspired the table behind us to order the same as us! If you’re looking for a low-key, classic Melbourne vibe with good-quality drinks, Loop Roof is for you!

Rooftop review roundup: Fable might just be my other favourite rooftop bar in Melbourne. It also holds the title of being one of the highest! Up on the 13th floor, this rooftop bar will certainly elevate your dining and drinking experience in Melbourne. With sensational, sweeping views across the whole city and a classic, boujee rooftop bar feel and the prettiest of glasses, I was sold.

The evening vibe was fun on a Friday, with a DJ but not so loud that you couldn’t chat. Sunset was spectacular too, although they had to close the retractable roof as rain was forecast. I’d love Friday evening so much, I booked to go back for lunch the next day – not something I usually do on a trip as so little time, so many rooftops! But thankfully, the next day brought clear blue skies, so I got to experience this rooftop in all its glory, along with a different side to its clientele! Think boozy brunches with the girls and drunken dancing, but all good spirits!

Aside from the vibe and the height of this rooftop, what stole my heart, unusually for me, was the food. And I’m not a foodie! The secret? The entire menu was gluten-free. No modifications, no faffing and no compromised dishes. You wouldn’t even know. AMAZING! The only other rooftop bar I’ve come across offering an entirely gluten-free menu is Los Mochis in London. However, since my visit, Fable has introduced gluten-containing options, so I’ll have to go back to make sure the standard for gluten-free dining has been upheld!

Rooftop review roundup: ‘Love on top’ is the motto of Stolen Gem Rooftop Bar, and it really rings true. It’s a small space with affordable drinks, making it perfect for after work or an afternoon delight that won’t break the bank. It almost feels like a secret lovers hideaway, it is so discreet! I last visited on a Saturday just as they opened. I hadn’t booked but took a chance, and it paid off! Although the roof was closed on what was a scorching day, the front-row seating was directly in the sun, so we had to sit at the tables behind but not for long as the sun soon moved – just note if you come mid afternoon to slap on that suncream especially if you want the uninterrupted views for which, it really is a gem of a rooftop bar in Melbourne.

Rooftop review roundup: Despite its name deriving from the Spanish word for century, Siglo Rooftop Bar is all about transporting you to Paris. White tablecloths, Parisian wicker café chairs, a laid-back attitude and copious amounts of champagne all help set the scene. And in true French, laid-back style, there’s no time limit on your table. I knew this could be dangerous!

It’s advisable to get there early, especially if you want a spot at the front overlooking the view, as they don’t take reservations and it’s a small space. That’s exactly what I did, yet there was already a queue forming as it opened!

Despite being back in Melbourne to experience its rooftop bars, this one felt a little too close to home for me, having lived in both Australia and Paris! I adored this little French fancy, even though it didn’t have the best views. It was such a cosy and cute experience. If you’re living in Melbourne and craving some European rooftop culture, Siglo should be your next rooftop stop!

Rooftop review roundup: The Terrace Bar at The Sheraton Hotel in Melbourne is open Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings only (2026 update) throughout October to March. So for this Melbourne rooftop bar one you will need to plan accordingly so as not to be disappointed. (As I was on my first attempt!) Now they have the booking system so can see clearly when is available. Though it is a shame as it is a perfect hideaway to escape for the afternoon too especially as Happy Hour is 4-6pm and selected drinks are just $8 and Margarita pizzas are $5! This small secret oasis terrace is winning at being affordable this season in Melbourne city. Kinda makes me want to revisit Australia ASAP!

Rooftop review roundup: Currently closed for a refurbishment until Spring 2026 – it was meant to be October opening but it has been slightly delayed. Perfect for commuters – this rooftop bar is just opposite Finders Station. It may only be on level 2 but it has sweeping views, perfect perching stops and some fabulous cocktails. I arrived just as they had opened and they were super informative and helpful despite busy setting up. What I loved most was the views of the Yarra River – a rare gem among the rooftop bars of Melbourne. Oh and the Transport Hotel is not actually hotel if you were thinking of staying here! It is a venue of restaurants, live music and all the fun!

Rooftop review roundup: This ravishing little rooftop had a London rooftop bar vibe and oozed an air of exclusivity. The actual terrace is quite small and shaded from the strong sun which was a blessing as I burn fast but hate being indoors! However inside is lavish boujee bar and some great booths and seating should you need to hide from the heat. I did feel slightly intimidated walking into the hotel lobby but was soon put at ease once on the rooftop. The barmen were some the friendliest, ready to conjure up a classic or quirky cocktail at my request! So don’t be shy, this is a great rooftop bar in Melbourne and late night party vibes.

Rooftop review roundup: State of Grace Rooftop Bar is a floral getaway for those perfect fizz afternoons. Situated slightly apart from the usual rooftop hotspots, this bar and its surrounding area have mixed reviews. Although quieter than the bustling CBD, it’s conveniently close to Flinders Station. Do be mindful if leaving late as it can feel a little unsafe, it did for me. But it’s not one to skip but maybe not one to walk alone from. Laid back and gorgeously decorated with awesome city sights to see. Oh and they offer Saturday Sun sessions. Or fun sessions as I would call them!

Rooftop review roundup: Baxter, or as it was called Captain Baxter has reopened in October 2026 after a refresh. Thankfully it still retains its rooftop with views over the ocean. Sadly its has lost one of it’s USP of having plenty of gluten free dishes. RIP the dumplings I still dream about! But as a tourist, Baxter St Kilda rooftop bar is absolutely still worth the effort of leaving the city and I last did it in 40 degrees!!

In recent times, St Kilda has become less popular with locals. Being overly touristy and full of partying is to blame but I still love this spot not least because a rooftop restaurant by the ocean is my favourite way to rooftop! Super easy to jump on a tram from the CBD (note that the trams are only free inside the CBD). I had just gone for drinks but stayed for the food and an afternoon lost in sea views.

Rooftop review roundup: Not to be confused with the Arbory Bar that is very much on land, as I nearly booked the wrong one! Afloat is a summer pop up that should be here all year round, it is so fabulous! Akin to a private members club, beach bar and rooftop restaurant all rolled into one! Technically it only scrapes through on the rooftop criteria with a little rooftop terrace on the float. But it does! The rest of the float is equally as fabulous, it even has a pool! Bookings are a must for groups as this place was buzzing but walk in’s are very much encouraged. And 2026/7 they are taking you to Greece! So if haven’t made it to Europe yet then you can at least feast and drink like a Greek God here! Yamas!

Famed for fairy tales and fables but most importantly for it’s cocktails! Fancy a ‘Mamma Bear’ or maybe a ‘Little Bear’ shot! Or even a selfie with Goldilocks Bear – yes they have one of those too. There is also plenty of shade – we can’t have bears that get burnt!

There are screens for your televised sports and plenty of space to chill away from them too! It’s thoughtful with how they have used the space and loved some retro throwback pieces. Rooftop review roundup: I love when a rooftop bar develops a proper personality and they one certainly has! Naked for Satan could be construed in many ways but actually it lies in the hard work of a Russian refuge so was affectionately named, Satan. He secretly distilled Vodka, often not wearing many if any clothes, due to the heat. This moonshine secret and all those involved would use the code ‘Lets get Naked for Satan’ when involved. Thus this rooftop bar has kept this legend alive with some cheeky menu’s and drinks in a colourful rustic setting. You can even get a Naked Vodka! And you can keep your clothes on though at 40 degrees I was tempted not to though I didn’t fancy being arrested! This rooftop bar isn’t in the CBD so requires a special trip which as you can’t book is a gamble. But fear not there’s a great indoor while you wait for a table.

Rooftop review roundup: The most unusual rooftop in Melbourne goes to…Easy’s Rooftop Bar! Burgers & Beers served five stories up in a rooftop train carriage overlooking Melbourne City. Brilliant. And side note, July 2026 London has just opened a tube version at Village Underground.

One thing to note about Easeys is, it a good walk from Melbourne’s CBD. So is more a destination to come which in 40 degrees I did as I was not missing this experience! The train carriages are from Hitachi carriage which ran from 1972 to 2014 when air conditioned trains replaced them. But they are full enclosed however this rooftop still meets the criteria to be on this page as they have a small rooftop outside space. Less terrace more like a small smoking area but it still counts as a rooftop! e a diner on a rooftop with a homage to the graffiti heritage of the trains too!

The food is billed as diner food but still caters for all allergies – being gluten free this was great news to be able to refuel and re hydrate in a carriage balanced on the edge of a building! This is a must for all train enthusiasts and rooftop addicts! Plus if you love the Melbourne graffiti scene, then Easey’s has quite a collection. A must visit.

Rooftop review roundup: This is for hotel guests or to hire for a rooftop event. I am including it should you be looking for a hotel with a great rooftop for some rest bite. (Though double check they have no private events during your stay – as with any rooftop). I was there in February and it was super hot and super quiet. Perfect after a day exploring the city to just chill before going out for dinner or to take your morning coffee on. They will bring drinks up to you from the bar or you could bring your own up. It did miss a bit of atmosphere which could be fixed by some music but otherwise I loved hanging here and even made a new friend!
